It’s a considered facial protocol, not a five-minute scrape.

The honest picture

What dermaplaning actually does

Dermaplaning is a professional physical exfoliation treatment. Using a sterile blade, superficial dead skin cells and fine facial vellus hair, sometimes called peach fuzz, are carefully removed from the surface of the skin.

What this genuinely achieves: smoother-feeling skin, a brighter, fresher-looking complexion, and a more even surface for makeup application. What it isn’t: a treatment that reaches deeper structural concerns, stimulates significant collagen production, or corrects established scarring or laxity. The available research on dermaplaning specifically has historically described the evidence base for broader rejuvenation claims as limited, which is exactly why this page focuses on what the treatment reliably does well, rather than overselling it as something it isn’t.

What you might notice

What you might notice

These are examples of what clients commonly notice, not a diagnosis.

Smoother Texture

A noticeably smoother surface, immediately after treatment.

Removing the buildup of superficial dead skin cells leaves the skin’s surface feeling smoother to the touch, often noticeable straight away.

Brighter-Looking Skin

A fresher, more polished appearance.

With the outermost layer of dead cells removed, skin often looks brighter and less dull, since what’s being revealed is simply fresher skin underneath.

Vellus Hair Removal

Fine facial hair removed, temporarily.

Vellus hair, the fine, soft hair on the face, is removed at the surface. It grows back at the same rate, colour and thickness as before, dermaplaning doesn’t change the hair follicle. It can feel slightly different as it first regrows, since the tip is now blunt rather than naturally tapered, but this settles.

Event-Ready Finish

Why this is a popular choice before an occasion.

A smoother surface generally means makeup applies more evenly, which is part of why this is a treatment many clients consider before an event. Timing still matters, and is assessed individually, particularly if a peel forms part of your treatment.

The right fit

Who this suits, and who might need to wait

This may be a good fit if you want smoother, more polished-looking skin, are dealing with visible facial vellus hair, want your makeup to apply more evenly, or are looking for a lower-intervention option ahead of an occasion.

It isn’t a substitute for microneedling where more significant textural or scarring concerns are the priority, HIFU where structural lifting is the goal, or injectable skin-quality treatments. Where any of those is a better fit for what you’re actually trying to achieve, that’s exactly what your consultation is for.

Who might need to wait or be assessed further

Active inflammatory acne, active infection, significantly irritated or compromised skin, and recent sun exposure or sunburn are all things Georgina will check for before treatment, since dermaplaning isn’t automatically appropriate regardless of the skin’s current condition. This is assessed individually, not diagnosed from a description online.

The most common question

Will my hair grow back thicker?

No. Cutting vellus hair at the skin’s surface doesn’t change the hair follicle, and it doesn’t make hair grow back thicker, darker, or faster. As it regrows, the newly cut tip can feel slightly blunter for a short time, simply because it hasn’t yet tapered naturally, but this is temporary and doesn’t reflect any real change in the hair itself.

Planning ahead

Dermaplaning before an event

A Dermaplaning Glow Facial is a treatment many clients consider ahead of an occasion, since it’s generally a lower-intervention option compared to treatments with real recovery time. That said, timing is still individual, particularly if you’ve never had the treatment before, or if a peel forms part of your protocol. For a fuller look at how different treatments, including this one, fit into an event timeline, see Best Facial Before an Event.
