What body microneedling may help

Microneedling supports your skin’s own repair response over a planned course of treatment. It can help improve the appearance of certain stretch marks and scars, but it doesn’t erase them. What’s realistic for you depends on the type, age and area of the concern, which I assess at your consultation.

Stretch marks

Newer stretch marks can be assessed for treatment, and so can older white or silvery stretch marks. The improvement achievable varies, and I'll explain what may be realistic for your skin before you commit.

Body acne scarring

Settled acne scarring on the back, chest or shoulders can be assessed for treatment. Scarring usually needs a series of sessions, and your plan is reviewed as your skin responds.

Healed surgical and injury scars

Some fully healed surgical or injury scars may be suitable. I assess each scar individually, and some scars are better referred to another approach or a medical professional.

Active acne on the back or chest

Active acne and acne scarring are different concerns, and they’re planned differently. If you have active breakouts on your back, chest or shoulders, begin with a Skin Consultation. I assess your skin before recommending appropriate treatment options, which may be a different first step from microneedling. Where acne is severe, painful or widespread, I may recommend you see your GP or a dermatologist first.

Suitability, and reasons to postpone

Often a good fit

  • Settled stretch marks, newer or older
  • Settled acne scarring on the body
  • Fully healed surgical or injury scars, assessed individually

Reasons to postpone or assess first

  • Infection, open wounds or broken skin in the area: treatment is postponed until healed
  • Raised, thickened or keloid scars, or a tendency to form them
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent isotretinoin, or recent treatments to the same area
  • Certain medical conditions or medications affecting healing

Suitability is always confirmed at your Skin Consultation, where I may adapt, postpone or recommend a different approach.

Which areas can be treated?

Body microneedling can be considered wherever suitable stretch marks or body scars occur, including the back of the legs. I assess the area, your skin and the concern at consultation before recommending treatment. The size of the area, the skin there and your goals all shape your plan and quote.

How I assess a scar or stretch mark

There’s no single waiting time that suits every scar. Instead, I look at whether the area has fully healed and settled, and at the type, colour, texture and age of the mark. Where a scar is still changing, raised or thickened, I may recommend waiting, a different approach, or a medical opinion first.

What I look at

  • Whether the skin has fully healed and settled
  • The type of mark: stretch mark, acne scar, or surgical or injury scar
  • Colour, texture and how long it has been there
  • Your skin tone and how your skin has healed before
  • Your goals and what's realistic

Baseline photographs are taken under consistent conditions, so we can review progress fairly.

Skin tone and pigmentation

Microneedling can be suitable for a wide range of skin tones, assessed individually. Deeper skin tones can be more prone to temporary darkening after any skin treatment, so I take this into account when planning your treatment and aftercare, and we talk it through before you begin.

Some stretch marks and scars are darker or lighter than the surrounding skin. Colour differences don’t always respond in the same way as texture, so I’ll explain what microneedling may realistically change for your marks, and where another approach may be more appropriate.

Your written aftercare includes sun protection for the treated area, which matters for every skin tone.

Comfort and recovery

Comfort is discussed with you before treatment. How it feels varies with the area and your skin; some areas are more sensitive than others.

Straight after

Redness, warmth and a tight or tender feeling, sometimes with mild swelling.

The following days

Skin usually calms, and some people notice dryness or light flaking.

Across your plan

Change is gradual and builds across sessions. We review progress together at agreed points.

Treated areas are often covered by clothing, so it helps to plan around tight waistbands, straps or friction on the area, and around heavy exercise, swimming or heat. Your written aftercare explains what to wear, when to return to exercise and how to care for the area, based on your treatment.

Your written aftercare explains cleansing, sun protection, clothing, exercise and when to restart body skincare products.

If you’re planning treatment before a holiday or event where the area will be on show, mention it at your consultation so we can plan your sessions around it.

Your body treatment plan

Body microneedling is planned individually following consultation. The treatment area, concern and skin response guide the recommended sessions, spacing and aftercare. Your quotation explains the proposed plan and costs.

What your written plan includes

  • The treatment area
  • Price per session
  • The recommended initial number of sessions
  • Proposed spacing and review points
  • The total quoted price for your plan, and any completion date

How many sessions will I need?

There’s no fixed number for body concerns. Stretch marks and scars often need a series of treatments, and some respond more slowly than others. I recommend an initial number of sessions after assessing you, then review your progress at agreed points before suggesting anything further. I won’t promise that a set number of sessions will be enough.

What will it cost?

Because body areas vary so much in size and need, body treatments are quoted individually after your consultation. You’ll know the price per session and the full cost of your recommended plan in writing before you commit.

Every new client begins with a 30-minute Skin Consultation (£50, paid at booking). Your £50 consultation fee is redeemable against a treatment or programme costing £250 or more, provided you book within 14 days of your consultation and attend your first treatment within 30 days of the consultation. The fee covers your assessment and recommendations, and is retained if treatment isn’t suitable or you decide not to proceed.
