Traditional lash lifts: Wait 24–48 hours before getting lashes wet.
Korean lash lifts (cysteamine): Usually only 4–6 hours, because the bonds set faster and are more stable.
This is one of the most common questions after getting a lash lift:
"Can I get my lashes wet? What about showering, swimming, or the gym?"
The answer depends on the type of lash lift you had, and getting it wrong can affect your results.
This guide covers exactly what you need to know.
Traditional lash lifts use a chemical process to soften the bonds inside the hair so the lash can be reshaped.
During the treatment, the technician applies a lifting solution that temporarily breaks down disulfide bonds within the hair structure. These bonds are responsible for maintaining the natural shape of the lash.
Once the lashes are moulded onto a silicone shield to create the curl, a neutralising solution is applied to reform those bonds and lock the new shape into place.
With older formulas, moisture could sometimes interfere with the final stabilisation process. Because of this, clients were told to avoid:
This advice eventually became standard lash lift aftercare, but it's now considered outdated for modern Korean lash lifts.
A lash lift works by breaking and reforming the disulphide bonds in your lash hair. This is a two-step process:
STEP 1, Lifting Solution
Breaks the bonds so the lash can be reshaped
STEP 2, Setting Solution
Reforms the bonds in the new lifted position
After step 2, the bonds continue to stabilise over the next few hours. Water and moisture can interfere with this process, especially in the first 24–48 hours.
Key point: The longer you wait, the more stable the lift will be.
Hair, including eyelashes, is naturally hydrophilic, meaning it absorbs water. When lashes become wet, the hair shaft temporarily swells as moisture enters the outer layers of the cuticle.
If water, steam, or sweat reaches your lashes before the bonds have fully set:
However, once the lash lift process is complete and the internal bonds have been reset, water alone cannot reverse the curl. The shape of the lash has already been chemically stabilised.
This is especially common if you shower with very hot water, go swimming, or do an intense workout within the first 24 hours.
Korean lash lift technique creating a natural, lifted result
Traditional lift: Avoid direct water on lashes for 24–48 hours. You can shower, just angle your face away.
Korean lift: Usually safe after 4–6 hours.
Avoid for 24–48 hours. Steam is essentially moisture at high temperature, it can affect the bonds while they're still setting. This includes facial steamers, saunas, and very hot showers.
Light activity is usually fine. But heavy sweating can affect lash lift results, sweat contains salt and moisture.
Best practice: Skip the intense HIIT or hot yoga for 24 hours.
Wait at least 48 hours. Chlorine and salt water are both harsh on freshly lifted lashes. After the initial period, swimming is fine, and lash lifts actually hold up very well in water.
Our Korean lash lifts use advanced cysteamine formulas with shorter aftercare requirements, and results that last 8–12 weeks.
Book a Korean Lash LiftIf you've had a Korean lash lift, you may have been told you only need to wait 4–6 hours instead of 24–48.
This is because Korean lash lifts use cysteamine-based formulas instead of the traditional thioglycolate. The chemistry is different:
Instead of aggressively forcing the lash into a tight curl, Korean techniques aim to enhance the natural lash line with a softer, more flexible lift. By the time the neutralising step is complete, the lash bonds have already reformed and the new shape has been set.
This means the aftercare is less restrictive and many clients find Korean lash lifts easier to fit around their lifestyle. If you are thinking about getting a Korean lash lift in Fulham, you can find full treatment details and booking information on our service page.

Even though Korean lash lifts are low maintenance, a few simple habits will help keep your lashes healthy and ensure the lift lasts as long as possible:
Most Korean lash lifts last around 6–8 weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle. Because each lash grows and sheds naturally, the lift gradually softens as new lashes replace the lifted ones.
Don't panic. If it was just a small splash, you'll likely be fine. Gently pat dry (don't rub) and let them air dry naturally. If the lift drops within a few days, contact your technician.
Ideally avoid it for the first few hours, but occasional tears won't ruin your lift. Just try not to rub your eyes.
Avoid heavy oils near the lashes for 24–48 hours. After that, lash serums and gentle eye creams are fine, and can help keep lashes healthy.
Not necessarily. If they used a Korean cysteamine-based lift, the aftercare rules are shorter. Always follow your technician's specific advice, they know what products were used.
Wait 24–48 hours before applying mascara. When you do, use a water-based formula and avoid waterproof mascara, which is harder to remove and can pull on lashes.
If your lash lift dropped or became uneven within days, it could be due to:
If the results look over-curled, uneven, tangled, or over-processed, it may still be possible to correct the shape. A lash lift correction treatment can rebalance the curl and restore a more natural result.
